Metro East Story Text

Metro East

Metro East, which looks at the subways of six post-Soviet countries – Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Georgia and Armenia. Shot over the course of five winters in the last decade (2012, 2017-2019, 2021), the photographs capture the grandiose architecture of the stations, which were built in the 1930s to glorify the Soviet Union, and the commuters that frequent them. They show a modern society in juxtaposition with these underground subway systems that are relics of a distant, but not forgotten, past.
